A Born-Again Church: A Response

Growing up in the Church of God, talk of being “born again” was something about which I heard a lot. The struggle for me came when my experience and relationship with God did not reflect this one, pivotal moment, when I turned from a lifetime of sin and became a new person. Eugene Peterson describes discipleship as a “Long Obedience in the Same Direction” and that is a good description of how I have understood my own faith story. Sure, I had the time when I was 5 years old and I asked my parents to pray with me, following a church service where a Southern Gospel group had come to sing and, apparently, scare the living daylights out of a 5 year old with a hellfire-and-brimstone-type message. And maybe we could point to that moment as my moment of conversion. But as an adult, looking back on my faith journey, I see transformative seasons in my life, where I was being born again.

Our Stories So Far and My Story: A Second Home

In the first post of this series, I promised I would share a little bit about my story in the Church of God. My Church of God story actually begins in the United Methodist Church. My family has very deep roots in the UMC, both of my parents being raised in the UMC and their families’ involvement going back generations to the Methodist denominations that united to become the United Methodsit church. After my family moved to the Cleveland area when I was 7 years old, we began attending Strongsville United Methodist Church. Throughout my years growing up there, my family was deeply involved in the community. Most of all I loved my time singing in the Sanctuary Choir in high school. I also grew to treasure the seasons of the church and the liturgical year, and some of the most powerful worship experiences I had came during traditional Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter services. My Story: Believing or Belonging?

Do I belong to the Church of God because I believe, or do I believe because I belong to the Church of God?  I have always been in the Church of God.  Steeped in it actually.  My parents are both ordained Church of God pastors.  My Grandfather is a retired Church of God pastor.  My two brothers and I are all pastors in Church of God congregations.  I even went so far as to marry the daughter of a Church of God pastor, and her brother is also serving and working on his ordination in the Church of God (and he also married a Church of God PK).  All of my immediate family members, and their spouses, are all graduates of Anderson University/College/etc.  Family of God, indeed.

My Story: On seeds, roots, and the Church of God

The Planting

It was 1991. I went to church and I believed in God, and that was the extent of my knowledge of anything that might be called “The Church of God.” Then one day, my best friend in the seventh grade invited me to one of his youth group activities. He said it’d be worth my time because the power of God was alive in this community and people were finding their lives fulfilled and given meaning and purpose, and he himself had felt his heart strangely warmed while studying the introduction to Martin Luther’s commentary on the book of Romans.

Actually he said that there were cute girls there, and that these cute girls had friends. So I went.

And he was right. So I went back.

And thus began my journey in faith with the Church of God. I told my mom I wanted to go to this church instead of the Grace Brethren church we attended in Brookville, Ohio, and my mom, who was happy with the prospect that her children might actually want to attend any church, made the switch to Salem Church of God in Clayton, Ohio.

My Story: He tangata!

He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world?
It is people! It is people! It is people!
– Maori proverb

Whoever decided every story began with, “Once upon a time,” clearly didn’t know stories very well. As I think about my Church of God story, there is no clear “once upon a time” beginning. Rather, there were people who played their parts to weave together the tapestry of this story I now share with you.

Our Story: A Church of God Pair

As a missionary’s kid and then a pastor’s kid there were only two things in life that were consistent: my family and the church. Growing up the Church of God was my home, my safe place; it’s where I always came back to.

My Story: A Rich Inheritance

The story of my involvement in the Church of God begins with my parents. My mother was born into a Christian family that attended the local Church of God congregation in southeastern Ohio. However, for private reasons, her family began attending a local Nazarene congregation, where they have remained ever since. Yet the roots of the Church of God run deep in that family: to this day, my grandmother and aunt (my relatives still living in that town) faithfully support their Nazarene church but are not members there. I believe their non-membership is due to the Church of God influence against man-made church membership requirements.

Our Stories…

In the initial post on this blog, David Aukerman wrote these words:

We have so much in common, and yet we love our differences. We share a common theological heritage, but we don’t always agree with each other. We are ministers and missionaries, hopers and dreamers, thinkers and feelers, friends and companions. We care deeply and laugh loudly. We desire the best for each other, our congregations, and the movement which we call home. We live in different parts of the world, but we yearn for the annual pilgrimage. We are growing and being grown, shaping and being shaped, loving and being loved.

But most of all, we belong.

As David points out, everyone contributing to this blog has been drawn together through a common theological heritage and shared experiences. But we also have very different journeys that have brought us to the places we are today and the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana), this movement we call home. Our unique stories shape our perspectives and our approaches to following Jesus and serving the church.

There is great power in a story, and this is why I am excited to introduce the next series on this blog, “My Story: _____” With this series, we will to introduce you to the people who will be contributing regularly to this space—our “conversation starters,” if you will. This series will help us recognize the uniqueness of our individual stories and share more about what brought us to the Church of God and why we are committed to this movement. We hope that by acknowledging our differences, we can more fully appreciate the unity we share in our commitments to Christ, the Church, and the Church of God.

Because significant portions of my story are closely tied to one of the other contributors, I will share more about myself at the end of the series. In the meantime, we hope some parts of our stories will resonate with you. Most of all, we want to lay a foundation for the conversations to come and begin to cultivate a space where real dialogue can happen, different perspectives can be shared, and despite the differences that may exist between us, acknowledge that we belong.
